Healwell is pleased to partner with Inova and Life with Cancer to offer three free massage therapy sessions to Inova patients affected by cancer who are in active treatment or are in stages of advanced disease. Active treatment is defined as patients currently undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy, proton therapy, aromatase inhibitors and immunotherapy. If you would like to participate in this program please complete the form and Healwell's Service Coordinator will contact you.

Healwell also partners with Life with Cancer to provide discounted massage therapy ($70/session) to patients who have finished their free sessions, and caregivers. Click here to book your appointment online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is oncology massage?

Oncology massage is the modification of massage therapy to safely work with the effects of cancer and cancer treatment. Everyone affected by cancer — people in active treatment, those in recovery or survivorship, those at the end of life, and even caregivers — can benefit from oncology massage. What is the cancellation policy for the free massage program?

When it is possible we ask that you call (703-662-1603) or email (sara@healwell.org) 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel your appointment. If you have a medical emergency or are ill and unable to give 24 hours notice, please call 703-662-1603 and give as much notice as possible.

We understand that life happens. If you do not arrive for an appointment and fail to notify Healwell once, you can reschedule the session with no penalty. If you miss two sessions without giving notice, you will not be eligible for a third session.

Can I tip my massage therapist?

Our massage therapists are credentialed healthcare providers and therefore cannot accept tips. You are welcome to express your appreciation by making a donation to Healwell.

Can I continue to receive oncology massage with Healwell after the three free sessions?

Yes! Healwell is pleased to partner with Life with Cancer to provide discounted massage therapy to patients and caregivers. After the three free sessions, you may continue to book massage sessions and pay out of pocket at a discounted rate of $70/session. If you would like to schedule private pay sessions, click here.

How long are the sessions?

Each session is 50 minutes long. Please plan to arrive 5-10 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to ensure you have enough time to park and get to the treatment room on time.

Can I get deep tissue massage?

Healwell massage therapists are trained in oncology massage and will adapt pressure and speed to ensure maximum support. Deep and vigorous massage may add to fatigue, compromise skin or bone integrity, aggravate the side effects of compromised blood cell counts or vital organ impairment, cause nausea, create unnecessary risk for someone with or at risk for blood clots, or trigger or exacerbate lymphedema.

Do I have to take my clothes off?

No. The massage therapist can adapt to work around and/or over any garments you choose to leave on. You can receive an excellent and complete massage fully clothed if that's most comfortable to you. If you do choose to disrobe, you will be covered by a sheet and blanket and your modesty will be protected at all times.

Can I go to multiple locations?

Yes. You can receive all three sessions at a single location, or you can choose a different location for some or all sessions.
